Queen Lili‘uokalani
1838-1917, reigned 1891-1893
“Farewell to thee.” In England to celebrate Queen Victoria’s fifty years as monarch, Lili‘uokalani learned Hawaii’s King Kalakaua had been forced to sign the Bayonet Constitution at swordpoint.
As Hawaii’s only Queen she tried to restore the monarchy’s powers, but in 1893 American and European businessmen pulled off a coup.

She was cut off from her people and imprisoned alone in the palace for a year. She wrote down her memoirs and original songs, including the famous “Aloha ‘Oe”—not just a lovers’ goodbye, but a lament for her country.
