Kamehameha II adopted western ways, but also western ills. When he sat down and ate with his mother, the young Kamehameha II broke the ancient laws of kapu and ended the Hawaiian religion, beating its supporters in battle.
Christian missionaries soon arrived, but the king never fully converted, preferring western drink and traditional polygamy. The impulsive young king liked to entertain and traveled to London. But just before he was to meet the English King, Kamehameha II caught measles and died.
