King Kamehameha III

Hawai‘i artist Mark Martel has infused classic black and white photos with vivid, royal color to show the Hawaiian Royalty in a fresh, Pop-Art style.

King Kamehameha III
1813-1854, reigned 1825-1854
Kamehameha III faced invasions, uprisings, plague and politics. He grew up torn between the old ways and Puritan Christianity. His elder brother’s early death made him King at age 11— western diseases were ravaging Native Hawaiians.

The population would be halved during the thirty-year reign of Kamehameha III. He helped Hawai‘i modernize with its first constitution. But land ownership by outsiders had also begun.
